Press Release: March, 23, 2018: Maulana Mahmood Madani General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind while opposing the government’s affidavit concerning minority status of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), termed it contradictory to the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Maulana Madani asserted that historically and by it natural character it’s a minority institution that cannot be changed merely on the basis that it receives Government fund.
Maulana Madani argued that Shaikhulhind Maulana Mahmood Hasan had laid the foundation this institution by his own hands and during initial period Dr. Zakir Hussain and his colleagues worked hard to strengthen its foundation. With this strong ground, JMI has been continuing to retain its minority character till now. In 2011, the Government of India accepted the declaration of National Commission for Minority Educational institutions. Thus it’s the onerous responsibility of the succeeding governments to maintain its minority character and respect values of the Constitution.
Maulana Madanai also asserted the incumbent government’s stand directly contradicts Constitutional provision of article 30 of clause (2) which stipulates that state, in granting aid to educational institutions, discriminate against any educational institution on the ground that it is a minority institution.
Maulana Madani said that if government keeps up with its slogan (sabka saath sab ka vikaas) then it should not indulge in dual practices like it considering the fact that the educational condition of the community is very apathetic.
Maulana Madani urged the government to review its stand and stick to the government’s accepted stand. He reiterated that Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has always remained in for-front for protecting minority status of (JMI) and its will continue so for maintaining it.
